Towards a relation extraction framework for cyber-security concepts
In order to assist security analysts in obtaining information pertaining to
their network, such as novel vulnerabilities, exploits, or patches, information
retrieval methods tailored to the security domain are needed. As labeled text
data is scarce and expensive, we follow developments in semi-supervised Natural
Language Processing and implement a bootstrapping algorithm for extracting
security entities and their relationships from text. The algorithm requires
little input data, specifically, a few relations or patterns (heuristics for
identifying relations), and incorporates an active learning component which
queries the user on the most important decisions to prevent drifting from the
desired relations. Preliminary testing on a small corpus shows promising

ACS photometry of extended, luminous globular clusters in the outskirts of M31
A new population of extended, luminous globular clusters has recently been
discovered in the outskirts of M31. These objects have luminosities typical of
classical globular clusters, but much larger half-light radii. We report the
first results from deep ACS imaging of four such clusters, one of which is a
newly-discovered example lying at a projected distance of ~60 kpc from M31. Our
F606W, F814W colour-magnitude diagrams extend ~3 magnitudes below the
horizontal branch level, and clearly demonstrate, for the first time, that all
four clusters are composed of >10 Gyr old, metal-poor stellar populations. No
evidence for multiple populations is observed. From a comparison with Galactic
globular cluster fiducials we estimate metallicities in the range -2.2 < [Fe/H]
< -1.8. The observed horizontal branch morphologies show a clear second
parameter effect between the clusters. Preliminary radial luminosity profiles
suggest integrated magnitudes in the range -6.6 < M_V < -7.7, near the median
value of the globular cluster luminosity function. Our results confirm that
these four objects are bona fide old, metal-poor globular clusters, albeit with
combined structures and luminosities unlike those observed for any other

High power coupled CO2 waveguide laser array
A hollow-bore ridge waveguide technique for phase locking arrays of coupled CO2 rf excited waveguide lasers was demonstrated. Stable phase-locked operation of two- and three-channel arrays has been demonstrated at the 50 W output level. Preliminary experiments with a five-element array generated an output power of 95 W but phase-locked operation was not conclusively demonstrated

PACE: Pattern Accurate Computationally Efficient Bootstrapping for Timely Discovery of Cyber-Security Concepts
Public disclosure of important security information, such as knowledge of
vulnerabilities or exploits, often occurs in blogs, tweets, mailing lists, and
other online sources months before proper classification into structured
databases. In order to facilitate timely discovery of such knowledge, we
propose a novel semi-supervised learning algorithm, PACE, for identifying and
classifying relevant entities in text sources. The main contribution of this
paper is an enhancement of the traditional bootstrapping method for entity
extraction by employing a time-memory trade-off that simultaneously circumvents
a costly corpus search while strengthening pattern nomination, which should
increase accuracy. An implementation in the cyber-security domain is discussed
as well as challenges to Natural Language Processing imposed by the security

An Ultraviolet-Selected Galaxy Redshift Survey - II: The Physical Nature of Star Formation in an Enlarged Sample
We present further spectroscopic observations for a sample of galaxies
selected in the vacuum ultraviolet (UV) at 2000 \AA from the FOCA balloon-borne
imaging camera of Milliard et al. (1992). This work represents an extension of
the initial study of Treyer et al. (1998). Our enlarged catalogue contains 433
sources; 273 of these are galaxies, nearly all with redshifts z=0-0.4. Nebular
emission line measurements are available for 216 galaxies, allowing us to
address issues of reddening and metallicity. The UV and Halpha luminosity
functions strengthen our earlier assertions that the local volume-averaged star
formation rate is higher than indicated from earlier surveys. Moreover,
internally within our sample, we do not find a steep rise in the UV luminosity
density with redshift over 0<z<0.4. Our data is more consistent with a modest
evolutionary trend as suggested by recent redshift survey results. We find no
evidence for a significant number of AGN in our sample. We find the UV flux
indicates a consistently higher mean star formation rate than that implied by
the Halpha luminosity for typical constant or declining star formation
histories. Following Glazebrook et al. (1999), we interpret this discrepancy in
terms of a starburst model for our UV-luminous sources. Whilst we can explain
most of our observations in this way, there remains a small population with
